Animal Health
at 1890 Universities

Across the 1890 network, students have more pathways into animal health careers than you might expect.

When most people think about animal health careers, they think of veterinary school. But the path is broader — across the nineteen 1890 land-grant institutions, students can pursue animal science, pre-veterinary science, laboratory animal science, veterinary technology, and animal bio-health sciences, in addition to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine pathway.

DVM Pathways

DVM programs &
direct pathways.

The following institutions have accredited or emerging DVM programs, or have established formal partnerships that create a direct pathway for their students into a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program.

Tuskegee University

Tuskegee, Alabama
  • DVMDoctor of Veterinary Medicine — Accredited (AVMA COE)
  • B.S.Animal and Poultry Sciences — Veterinary Science option
  • B.S.Animal and Poultry Sciences — Science option

Choosing

Finding the right
program for you.

With so many program options across the 1890 network, it helps to start with a clear sense of where you want to end up. A few questions worth considering:

  • Are you aiming for the DVM degree? Start by looking at DVM programs directly, along with undergraduate degrees designed to prepare students for vet school applications — several of these schools offer strong pre-vet tracks.
  • Are you interested in animal health but not necessarily as a veterinarian? Several of the B.S. programs — including Vet Technology, Laboratory Animal Science, and others — lead to distinct, rewarding careers that don't require a DVM.
  • Do you have a specific animal interest — livestock, aquaculture, wildlife, or exotic animals? Several of these schools have built distinctive strengths in specific niches, so your answer could point toward a particular fit.
  • Looking for a broad foundation that keeps doors open? An animal science degree (or related field) provides scientific background for vet school, graduate study, government careers, and agricultural industries.

Your academic advisor and the 1890 PVM Scholars Program coordinator at your institution are your best resources for navigating these options. Start your journey into animal health early.
