of Veterinary Medicine

The 1890 network includes institutions at the forefront of veterinary medicine education.

Two 1890 land-grant institutions are directly connected to veterinary medicine programs. Tuskegee University is home to the only accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program within the 1890 network. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is developing an emerging veterinary medicine program.

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)

Founded in 1944, Tuskegee's College of Veterinary Medicine is the only veterinary school at a historically Black university and the only accredited DVM program within the 1890 land-grant network. The college has a long and distinguished history of producing veterinarians who serve in private practice, government, research, and the military.

UMES is a historically Black 1890 land-grant institution located on the Delmarva Peninsula. The development of a veterinary medicine program at UMES represents a meaningful expansion of DVM pathways within the 1890 network and reflects the institution's commitment to training the next generation of veterinary professionals in a region with significant agricultural and rural veterinary needs.
